Trindle Brass Cordless Table Lamp

The Trindle is the full-size version of a lamp that works because it has no cable. A turned brass column on a weighted base carries a shade at proper table-lamp height, but the whole fitting lifts and moves, which means it can hold a dining table one evening and a console or bedside the next without a single socket being involved in the decision.

That portability changes how a room is lit. Instead of the arrangement being dictated by where the wiring happens to be, light can be placed where people actually sit. It is why cordless lamps have moved out of the novelty category and into serious interiors, particularly in period homes and rented flats where adding sockets is either expensive or simply not permitted.

Turned brass gives the column weight in the hand and a warmth under lamplight that painted metal cannot match. The finish develops a patina with handling, which most owners come to prefer, though it polishes back readily. Charge the lamp between uses with the supplied connection rather than a substitute adaptor, and position it away from table edges where it could be knocked over. Used across a long dining table, a pair spaced evenly gives far better light than one lamp working alone in the centre.
